Crazy Mountains of Montana
Campfire Lake Panorama by Shuksan Photography
As winter releases it’s grip on Montana I wanted to share some photos taken a few years ago on April 19th. Normally in Montana we receive our largest snowstorms in April and May. These storms combine with a deep and stable snowpack creating our best backcountry conditions of the season. Now if you factor in long spring days with our snow free valleys and rivers, you have the recipe for some serious fun! You can ride deep powder all morning before enjoying a nice mountain bike ride in the afternoon. The photo above shows the mountain side of the Northern Rockies springtime split personality. It is a panoramic photograph of Montana’s Crazy Mountains and shows the head of the Sweetgrass drainage where Campfire Lake sits.

Shot with a telephoto lens the background is deceiving, there is about 1000 vertical feet (300m) of terrain from the ridge line down to our location. Shot in the afternoon after a full day of riding we stopped and ate lunch. As we ate lunch the springtime temperatures rose and we watched large avalanches release on every aspect.
Bacon Rind Blizzard

The wonderful Bacon Rind Creek flows from Skyline Ridge in the Lee Metcalf Wilderness through beautiful meadows located in the northwest corner of Yellowstone National Park. Bacon Rind Creek meanders through these meadows eventually leading to it’s confluence with the Gallatin River near US Highway 191.
